Procedure to apply and obtain Biometric Residence Permit

Depending on your unique situation and the nation you are applying to, the procedure for applying for a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) can change.

Applying from the UK

  • If your immigration or visa application is accepted or you request to replace an earlier document, you can automatically be awarded a biometric residence permit.
  • Once your visa or immigration application has been submitted, you are not required to apply separately for a BRP, and there is no further cost.
  • If you submitted your immigration application from within the UK, you should obtain your Biometric Residence Permit within 7 to 10 days of receiving your decision letter.
  • You will receive your BRP at the address you provided on your application. If your application is delayed, you can report this online.

Applying from outside the UK

  • You must obtain your Biometric Residence Permit once you have arrived in the UK if your visa application was submitted from outside the UK.
  • You must complete this before your travel document’s vignette sticker expires or within 10 days of your arrival in the UK, whichever comes first.
  • You have the option to pick up your BRP from another Post Office location. At the Post Office location, you want to utilize, you must make arrangements for this and pay a fee. The Post Office branch cannot be changed for you by the Home Office.
